What is Estate Planning?

Everyone has an estate.  Your estate consists of everything that you own or have any interest in.  This can consist of cars; homes; bank accounts; investments; life insurance; furniture; and personal effects.  Regardless of it’s value, you have an estate and you can’t take it with you when you die.  So, the best thing to do is to plan how you want to pass your estate on to someone or something else, like a charity.

Estate planning is the process where you plan in advance, who is to receive your estate, what they will receive, and when they will receive it.  If you don’t do an estate plan, your estate may be given to someone or something, (like the State) contrary to your wishes.  You may also lose much of the value of your estate in taxes.   Estate planning begins with a will or a revocable living trust.  Please click on the links or tabs under those headings for more information.
